“Missionaries of Hope Among the Peoples”
This Sunday, the Church celebrates World Mission Sunday, a beautiful reminder that as baptized Catholics, we are all called to share the love of Christ beyond the walls of our own parish. On this day, Catholics across the globe unite in prayer, sacrifice, and solidarity to support missionary work in the poorest and most remote regions of the world.
World Mission Sunday is not simply about giving, it is about belonging to a Church that is truly universal. The Gospel continues to be preached in places where the faith is still young, and countless communities rely on our prayers and generosity to receive the sacraments, build parish life, educate children, and care for the poor.
Each autumn, parishes throughout the Archdiocese of New York join in this important collection, which supports the Pontifical Mission Societies, the Pope’s official missionary arm. These funds directly assist priests, religious sisters and brothers, catechists, and lay missionaries who dedicate their lives to bringing Christ’s hope to those most in need.
Pope Francis has chosen the theme “Missionaries of Hope Among the Peoples.” As Cardinal Dolan reminds us, the United States itself was once mission territory supported by the generosity of Catholics from abroad, now we are the ones asked to carry forward that legacy.
In addition, our Holy Father, Pope Leo, himself a former missionary, has recorded a brief but beautiful message urging support for the missions. We encourage you to take a moment to listen to his inspiring words:
